Trying to Have a Baby? Try a Natural Infertility Treatment

We all know couples who have had difficulty trying to have a baby. Fertility challenges are depressing, making you feel incredibly lost and alone. Fertility drugs can add to the anxiety because they increase the chances of multiple births and premature births according to the March of Dimes.  In addition to all these challenges, there’s also the significant financial investment involved in fertility treatment.

However, there is another alternative. You may be surprised to learn that acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine have been used for centuries to help women conceive without the need for medications or extensive procedures.

How does acupuncture aid fertility?

Acupuncture focuses on helping your body naturally address any issues that are causing problems getting pregnant.  Conception involves an intricate array of several systems working together perfectly. These systems include the thyroid and pituitary glands in addition to numerous hormonal changes. When one of those systems isn’t functioning at optimal levels, fertility can be affected. Even stress can upset this delicate balance, making conception even more difficult.

For example, the hormones secreted from the thyroid gland can affect fertility. If you have hypothyroidism (an under-functioning thyroid) or hyperthyroidism (an over-functioning thyroid), you could struggle with infertility. Acupuncture can help regulate your thyroid – or other systems—to increase the chance of conception.

Some of the more specific ways acupuncture can aid conception include:

  • Improving ovary function

  • Increasing blood flow to the endometrium

  • Improving follicular function

  • Relieving stress, which can cause conception problems for both men and women

  • Correcting problems with the endocrine system, which regulates reproduction, metabolism and sexual functions.

Acupuncture as a complement to Western fertility therapies

Even if you prefer to use conventional Western therapies to treat your infertility, studies have shown that also using acupuncture can increase conception rates by 26 percent, according to Tel Aviv University.

While acupuncture is a safe and effective treatment, some women may need medical or surgical assistance for fertility problems resulting from endometriosis or structural problems with the uterus or fallopian tubes.

Treatment from an experienced, accredited provider is vital

One of the reasons we recommend acupuncture so strongly is that there are very few risks associated with it. In fact, it is much safer than many traditional Western medications or therapies. However, it is always vital to seek treatment from an acupuncturist who has received the extensive training needed to effectively treat you.
