Desperate for Pain Relief? Five Reasons You Should Try Acupuncture

No one understands what it’s like to spend a day in your shoes. Sure, you can describe your chronic, debilitating pain, but often, mere words are not enough to express the physical and psychological strength needed to participate in everyday activities. It’s enough to make anyone feel frustrated and alone.

But you’re not alone.

We hear you, and we want to help you.

Chronic pain is one of the main reasons people seek acupuncture treatment. Often, acupuncture succeeds where other treatments have failed. As an additional bonus, acupuncture does not have the side effects of pain medication.

We’re also able to treat different types of pain, from headaches, to sinus pain to fibromyalgia and menstrual periods.

If you’re desperate for pain relief, we’ve outlined five reasons you should consider acupuncture.

1. It works.

We’re not the type to say we told you so, but Western medical studies are constantly reinforcing the principles of ancient Chinese medicine that have been around for thousands of years.  We’ve been extoling the virtue of acupuncture for decades, and Western science is finally acknowledging one simple fact:

Acupuncture is practiced because it works.

According to a publication by Harvard Medical School, international researchers conducted 29 studies involving 18,000 participants. The results showed that acupuncture relieved pain by at least 50 percent.

We’re pleased to say that our results often exceed that 50 percent mark. Many of our patients report that their pain is gone completely or dramatically reduced.

2. It doesn’t have side effects frequently seen with medication.

You probably dread reading the huge white paper that comes with your prescription bag. It’s the long laundry list of common side effects. While some of them may only pose an minor inconvenience – such as nausea or constipation — others can have devastating results.

Many pain relievers can cause extensive side effects. Even worse, some narcotic-based medications pose the risk of addiction.

Acupuncture has none of these risks. When you visit us, we won’t hand you a long list of potential side effects. We promise.

3. It may be more cost effective.

Whether or not your insurance company covers acupuncture treatment will vary depending upon the type of policy you have. The good news is that more and more insurance companies are recognizing that not only does acupuncture work, but it’s also more cost-effective.

Even if you have to pay for acupuncture treatments out-of-pocket, this is often cheaper when you calculate the expense and time of going to the doctor, filling a prescription and paying for the medicine. Often, you’re only allowed so many refills before you have to schedule another appointment with the doctor. Then the cycle starts all over again.

Granted, it will most likely take a handful of treatments. Ask yourself where you’d rather spend that time: waiting in line at the pharmacy, or relaxing on an acupuncture table? (Yes! It really is relaxing.)

4. It’s more natural treatment method.

Acupuncture releases endorphins, your body’s natural pain-fighting substances. This is the reason why, contrary to what you might imagine, acupuncture is extremely relaxing. Some patients even report feeling an acupuncture high during and immediately after a treatment. Obviously, this is a safe, natural high, similar to a runner’s high which is also produced by the body releasing a bunch of endorphins all at once.

5. It’s more convenient.

How many times have you gone to the pharmacy this year? How many hours have you spent in doctor’s offices getting refills or taking additional tests? Treatment for pain may also include surgery and extensive physical therapy during the recovery period. Acupuncture is more convenient –- and enjoyable — than a trip to the hospital or doctor’s office.

There’s more to acupuncture than pain relief.

The philosophy of acupuncture rests upon getting your body in touch with its natural healing powers. We see this as both an art and a science. The World Health Organization and National Institute of Health have recognized that acupuncture is an effective treatment for a wide range of conditions.

In addition to pain relief, we use acupuncture to treat a variety of conditions, including the following:

  • Infertility

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Digestive problems

  • Headaches

  • Menopausal symptoms

  • Fatigue

  • Allergies

  • Insomnia
