Need Allergy Relief? Try Acupuncture!

How many times have you sneezed today?

Did you immediately reach for the nasal spray after a few “achoos”?

Chronic allergies take a lot of enjoyment out of life, especially if you love the great outdoors. Nature is meant to be enjoyed and celebrated. Every beautiful flower should be greeted with gratitude – not with a stuffy nose. It saddens us to think that so many people are “imprisoned” by their allergies, limiting their day-to-day activities.

Even when prescription or over-the-counter medication provide relief, they often cause drowsiness and other side effects. In addition, there are several people for whom these allergy medicines don’t work.

While you may have heard a lot about how acupuncture provides pain relief, did you know it is also an effective allergy treatment?

How does acupuncture relieve allergy symptoms?

Well, if you want the long, drawn-out medical explanation, it impacts hormonal activates in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, releasing more corticosteroids.

We know. We think it’s a mouthful, too. It doesn’t capture the essence or poetry of what we do.

We don’t think there’s a need for a complicated explanation of the benefits of acupuncture—it’s actually very simple, as acupuncture helps your body do what it would naturally. During acupuncture, your brain is “told” to release substances called corticosteroids. These substances reduce swelling, which in turn, clear stuffy noses and sinuses.

Acupuncture also creates an antihistamine effect. You’ve probably heard about antihistamines—they are the active ingredient in most allergy medications. The beauty of acupuncture is that it provides the same benefits without medication.

Does acupuncture provide quick allergy relief ?

Yes! Sometimes patients will even experience allergy relief while they are still on the treatment table with all acupuncture needles in place. Patients may need to come back a few times a year while those with more severe allergy symptoms may need to come back more often as needed.

Is acupuncture backed up by scientific studies?

Yes, particularly for its benefits in allergy treatment. Western medicine is finally realizing the benefits of this ancient, holistic remedy. In addition to the positive clinical outcomes, acupuncture offers the following additional benefits:

Time

If you’re receiving “allergy shots” (immunotherapy) treatment, you’ll have to return to your doctor’s office several times in order to achieve results. Immunotherapy gradually introduces your body to diluted allergens to create a natural resistance. However, doing so takes time. Patients may need to return weekly or every two weeks over the course of several months to reach the desired effect.

By contrast, acupuncture produces long-lasting results in a much shorter period of time.

Expense

Some people may balk at the price of acupuncture, especially since some insurance companies will not cover it. However, you should consider the lifetime benefits of acupuncture. Ask yourself: how much have you spent in co-pays for allergy specialists or ENT physicians? How much have you spent on prescription and over-the-counter medicine over the last year? How much have you lost as far as job productivity?

When you add up all the factors, acupuncture may be the more logical choice.

Another element that is hard to put a price on: your time. Isn’t it worth it to get more immediate relief so you can return to the activities you once enjoyed?
